Celebrating St. Baldrick’s Day

April 11, 2016 by Peggy Schmidt Leave a Comment

"St Baldrick's Day"

There were a lot o brave women who parted with their hair at the event.

In Alaska, people are celebrating St. Baldrick’s Day today. Hundreds of brave individuals came to the Airlines Center in Alaska to donate money for children cancer research. Among the many brave men that shaved their heads and their beards for the cause, there were also ten ladies who decided to part with their locks of hair in the name of scientific research.

Alaskans are celebrating St. Baldrick’s Day for years now, every edition gathering more participants than the last. The novelty of the fundraiser is the fact that the people who come to donate can get their head shaved off, free of charge, of course.

This year, the donors were of a wider variety than in the previous editions. Ten women decided that shaving their heads in the name of scientific research is a statement that should be made by more female participants in the fundraiser.

Also, there were lots of schoolboys on the hairdresser’s chair. One of them declared that he is proud to offer the little that he has for the men and women who are working on new ways of treating children diagnosed with cancer.

From his point of view, the only bad thing about being bald is the fact that his colleagues at school will want to touch his head continuously.

There was another gentleman present that managed to grow an impressive beard in between the fundraising events. But he quickly parted with his manly main, in the name of science and in a solidary act.

The bearded man did not come to the event by himself. He was accompanied by his son, who also decided to have his head shaved off.

Seeing so many children renouncing their hair in the name of solidarity is a precious thing. School is a difficult environment, and when you’re just a bit different, you can be bullied, shamed, and ignored.

That is why the children that voluntarily shaved their heads are miniature heroes. Adults have it easier when it comes to unconventional hairstyles, but a bald child can be exposed to bullying. Shaving their heads, they showed more than solidarity; they demonstrated that they are willing to confront anybody who picks on bald children.

According to the organizers, the foundation managed to raise over $19,000 before the shaving even started. They are expecting the sum to double up until the end of the event.
