Are you ready to immerse yourself in H.P. Lovecraft’s world of madness and despair? Well, you’re in luck, because Cyanide Studio and Focus Home Interactive have just announced that a new Call of Cthulhu games is due to arrive this year.
When it comes to Lovecraft-inspired games and movies, we don’t have any reasons to complain. Since the early ‘80s, movies directors and game makers have done their best in order in order to reproduce that feeling of uneasiness associated with Lovecraft’s works.
Sadly for us, most of these screen adaptions were less than mediocre, focused mainly on gory stuff and jump scares rather than capturing the essence of the author’s short stories. Although the video game industry had its shares of fiascos, it managed somehow to produce a couple of blood-curling Lovecraftian games.
To name but a few of them – Amnesia, Alone in the Dark, Alan Wake, Deep Space, and Darkness Within, all of them had that je ne sais quoi which gave us the feeling of actually seeing the world through the eyes of a character created by Lovecraft.
Probably one of the most successful game titles was The Last Door, an 8-bit style point-and-click adventure indie game. The title was so successful that some of the most popular gaming publications dubbed it ‘a true love letter to Lovecraft.’
The last title to feature Cthulhu, the sleeping deity was Call of Cthulhu Dark Corners of the Earth. And let’s not forget about Sherlock Holmes The Awakened or the story of the great London detective who faced the great madness God and won.
And now, after all, these years, it would seem that we are again invited to step into the shoes of a Lovecraft-inspired character in order to solve a dark mystery. The upcoming game is called Call of Cthulhu Depths of Madness, and it tells the story of Edward Pierce, an unusual individual who will need to investigate a horrid murder which took place in Boston.
Throughout the game, Pierce, the story’s protagonist, will have to figure out what is real and what is not in order to solve the mystery surrounding a murder. Focus Home Interactive and Cyanide Studio declared that the game will be released sometime during 2017, and will be available for PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
