A new study from health experts suggests that calcium supplements are not as good for your health as you might have thought. They can cause heart-related problems, as the specialists say. However, the new findings apply only to pill supplements, and not to calcium which can naturally be found in food.
The researchers conducting the study explain that they haven’t discovered the exact cause which makes calcium supplements bad for your heart’s health. However, they believe that there is a link between the two, and that both patients and doctors should be aware of it.
People tend to use calcium supplements in order to fortify their bone system. They also think that large doses will boost the effect. However, this is not what the doctors recommend. They are concerned about the risk of heart-related problems brought by the pills, especially if excessively used.
Official statistics show that approximately forty-three percent of the people in the United States take calcium supplements. What’s more, it seems like over fifty percent of senior women use the medicine to fight osteoporosis.
The recent study is based on the results obtained from almost three thousand patients in the United States. They were all aged more than forty-five. The surveys covered a broad period of ten years, and the participants provided information on their everyday routine, regular exercises, eating habits and calcium supplement dosage. The researchers compared people who used the pills and those who didn’t, in order to observe the differences.
Specialists account for the phenomenon of calcification of arteries with people who participated in the study. This effect was revealed by CT scans, and it stands as a potential factor of heart diseases.
During the study, the researchers also observed that some people take calcium supplements although they don’t actually need them. This is why specialists suggest that people should ask for their doctor’s recommendation when it comes to this type of change in their diet. They are also advised to inform themselves before taking any kind of medication.
Nature is the best resource of vitamins and minerals, as the scientists suggest. They explain that calcium which can be found in natural food is not damaging for the heart, but on the contrary. Doctors advise people to consume products such as milk, beans, and oranges and take their calcium dose from them. What calcium-rich foods do you have in your fridge?
