A former employee of New York City’s Council has filed a lawsuit against the institution declaring that during his employment, he was humiliated and ridiculed by Vincent Gentile and his staff on account of suffering from Asperger Syndrome, a form of autism.
A recent event which involved a high-ranking official denotes that practical jokes and ridiculing someone because he suffers from an illness are not associated only with the school’s courtyard. Vincent Gentile, Brooklyn’s Councilman, and New York’s City Council have been sued by a former employee, who demands $10 million in reparations for discrimination and humiliation.
The man who sued New York City’s Council is Michael Bistreich. He worked for the institution for two and a half years, being the Councilman’s legislative and budgetary director.
Michael Bistreich has been diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome during his youth. As a result, the man tends to form strong relationships with inanimate objects, especially plush toys. Bistreich used to keep several plush toys in his office during his employment at the institution.
For this reason, Bistreich has been the subject of humiliation during his employment. Bistreich recalls that his colleagues played tricks on him, and, on one occasion, they’ve even locked up the man in the basement.
However, during his last months at Gentile’s office, the man said that the practical jokes were more frequent and crueler. Before he resigned from his function, the man declared that some of his colleagues took away the plush toys from his office, and decapitate them.
In addition, to take the joke even further, someone place on of the severed heads on top of a flag pole. On more than one occasion, the man and his attorney noted that because of his condition, Bistreich did not receive a raise and that these raises went to employees who did not deserve them.
The ex-aid with autism wants to sue the institution and the city of New York and wants $10 million worth of reparations.
In an official statement, New York City’s Council declared that Mr. Bistriech’s case is under review pending approval. In addition, the institution’s spokespersons declared that the City’s Council has zero tolerance for this kind of discrimination and that it will treat these allegations with the utmost severity.
