An Arkansas couple was recently sentenced to five years in prison after the authorities discovered a 15-day-old boy covered in rat bites. The couple was allegedly fast asleep and could not hear the child cries until 5 in the morning when the boy was discovered by the man’s mother.
Arkansas Couple Gave Conflicting Testimonies
On Thursday, Charles Elliott and Erica Shryok were sentenced to five years in prison. The couple pleaded guilty on the charge of child abuse and will be eligible for parole after spending 304 days behind bars.
According to the couple’s affidavit, on the 14th of May 2017, Elliott and Shryok woke up to the sound of their boy crying. Upon checking up on the child, the couple observed that the boy had been bitten by rats.
The couple also told the authorities that the infant was taken to the hospital soon after Elliott’s stepmother arrived. However, as the investigators noted, there are a series of discrepancies in the Arkansas couple’s testimony.
While the man recalls waking up at 5 a.m. to check up on the toddler, Shryok told them that the event started two and a half hours later.
After the child was transported to the hospital, the doctors determined that he was biting at least a hundred times by rats and that the infant must have screamed for hours at an end before his parents entered the room.
More than that, the infant needed reconstructive surgery, as part of his skull was exposed. The Arkansas couple was taken into custody where they admitted consuming crystal meth and marijuana before going to bed.
Shryok also claimed a family history of physical abuse and rape. The Arkansas couple has been sentenced to five years in prison and will be eligible for parole after 304 days.
