Gun shops are developing an anti-suicide initiative in Colorado, and it is one of the beneficial projects of the state. It began two years ago, in 2014, and it was inspired by a similar initiative in New Hampshire.
The anti-suicide initiative in Colorado is called “Colorado Gun Shop Project.” The partnership between gun shops also includes the participation of doctors and health specialists who can help them raise awareness about the phenomenon of suicide.
One of the shops in the partnership is Centennial Gun Club. Here is where doctor Emmy Betz has recently held a presentation on the danger of fire guns and suicidal rates.
Doctor Betz talked about the results shown by studies and statistics. They point out that people who survive a suicide attempt won’t kill themselves, eventually. On the other hand, the cases when fire guns are used, there is a smaller probability for the person to survive.
Colorado is in the top ten states in the U.S. with high suicidal rates. It ranked seven in the list. When the Colorado project started, back in 2014, the United States were facing one of the worst years regarding suicidal rates. More than forty thousand people killed themselves in 2014.
In addition to this, statistics also show that more than a half of the deaths caused by fire guns in 2011 were suicides. Over the last decade, the suicide rates have increased by nearly twenty-four percents.
Gun shop owners wanted to make a stand, as the products they sell are not meant to take people’s lives, but to protect them. They are worried about the situation, and their anti-suicide initiative aims to prevent people from doing reckless things.
Gun shop workers are also advised not to sell products to people who seem sad, depressed or in a bad state of mind. The owners admit that this is one of the rules in their business.
Both health specialists and gun shop owners are aware of the fact that suicide is a delicate subject. The seminaries held by experts in this project encourage people to talk to their friends and family and inform them on the matter. Spreading useful information is a good method to prevent suicide, experts think.
Psychologists say that committing suicide is an impulsive act, and doctor Emmy Betz also informs the people attending her speech about this.
The anti-suicide initiative in Colorado hopes the action will have cogent results within the next ten years.
