Whereas considered one of the most secure prisons in the United States, Alcatraz lost its fame back in 1962, when three prisoners managed to get off the island. Closed for more than half a century, the case was recently brought to attention after the U.S. Marshalls discovered a letter, allegedly written by one the inmates who managed to elude the authorities.
Alcatraz Inmates Escaped the Island Using Make-Shift Rafters
Jeff Harp, a security analyst, declared that the document in question was allegedly sent to the San Francisco’s Police Department back in 2013. Harp, who has collaborated with the FBI for almost two decades, recalls that the 1962 Alcatraz escape was highly mediatized considering the prison’s reputation.
For almost thirty years, no one managed to escape Alcatraz, despite many attempts. However, in the early 60s, three inmates convicted for bank robbery put together a plan to get off the Pacific rock. The 1962 prison escape became the subject of various documentaries and movies.
The men behind this daredevilish escape were brothers Clarence and John Anglin and Frank Morris. According to the official documents, the three of them managed to burrow their way up the ventilation shafts using drills fashioned from broken vacuum cleaner parts.
After widening the vent shaft, the three inmates navigated the prison’s pipe network and made it all the way up to the roof where they’ve slid down on the ground. Following their escape, the prison wardens found a workshop above their cells which they’ve used to fashion various tools, including a portable boat made out of 50 raincoats, life jackets, and oars.
To conceal their escape, the three inmates fashioned dummies using human hair, paper mache, plaster, and paint.
After more than 50 years of utter silence, one of the convicts decided to step forward and address the authorities. According to Harp, in 2013 the San Francisco Police Department received a letter, presumably written by John Anglin.
The letter mentioned that the two other inmates, John’s Brother, and Morris have passed away and that he’s willing to go back behind bars to tell his story and to receive medical attention as he’s battling cancer.
