A new report released by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, revealed that the abortion rates in the United States are lower than ever.
Big discrepancies between races have been noticed. Higher numbers of abortions among African-American women have been registered. Black women also had the highest pregnancy rates with 135 pregnancies for every 1,000 women. Among Hispanic women the pregnancy rate was 118 per 1000 women. White women had the lowest number with 84 pregnancies per 1000 women. The ages of the studied women were between 15 and 44, which represent the childbearing ages. The abortion rates for Asian women were not divulged.
In 2010, 17 fetal losses, 18 abortions and 65 births were accounted for every 100 pregnancies. Thanks to the more easy access to ob-gyns, the number of the unwanted pregnancies keeps declining.
The low abortion rate can be associated with better health education. Not only were the women uneducated in the past but they didn’t use birth control as much as nowadays. Also there are increased methods of birth control available that can vary from condoms to pills or even injections.
One of the authors of the report, Kathryn Kost says that as the sales for birth control grew, the abortions lowered. She continued with saying that the abortion rates spiked in 1980 and after that they only declined.
Another reason for the low rates was considered to be the legislation that asked women to consider their alternatives when it came to abortions. Further studied the reason seems not be valid since the report was done based on statistics until 2010, when the legislation considering abortions was not yet released.
In the last 20 years the unwanted pregnancies for girls of 14 and under have lowered with 67%, with an immense 15% decrease since 1990. Not only did the abortions rates dropped but the number of pregnancies did drop as well. In 2010 the pregnancy rates of women were lower than in 1990, concluding that in the recent years the overall pregnancies lowered.
The abortion rates in the United States being lower than ever is due to more women being educated, more birth control options and easier ways to acquire them.
