Netflix is the creator of numerous successful productions. However, ’13 Reasons Why’ is by far one of the most intriguing such shows as it tackles a slew of modern and controversial issues that many teenagers nowadays have to face. Following the launch of the TV show, Google registered 19% more web searches on suicide prevention and awareness.
Netflix Production Created Two Opposed Camps Regarding the Main Theme of the Show
The Netflix binge-able production ended in controversial criticism. On the one hand, viewers applauded the efforts to portray the silent yet scary struggles a teenager goes through when he or she contemplates suicide. More than that, they believe that this show teaches audiences how to identify traces of depression or suicidal intentions.
However, on the other hand, another group of viewers including mental health experts condemned this production. Their reasoning regards the relatable characters that can act as false role models for impressionable young students who are already feeling the effects of mental health issues.
A Recent Scientific Paper Indicates that the Show Raised Searches for Suicide Prevention but Also for Ways to Kill Oneself
A recent report published in JAMA International Medicine shed more light on the real impact ’13 Reasons Why’ caused. The study used Google search data. The findings suggested that the show’s premiere in March coincided with a surge in online materials associated with suicide prevention and awareness topics. At the same time, the show generated more search terms regarding ideation.
After the launch of the TV show, there were 26% more Google searches related to the phrase “how to commit suicide.” On the other hand, “suicide prevention” went up 23% while “suicide hotline number” received 21% more momentum.
Research professor at San Diego State University, John Ayers is the author of the paper. His conclusions pointed out to the fact that the show managed to attain its main goal. Their intention was to urge people to stop seeing certain phenomena as tabus and open up about them instead. At the same time, the production stirred thousands of more people to learn how to kill themselves.
